A jobless local man was arrested on Friday for robbing a Vietnamese sex worker of her smartphone worth 1,000 patacas after she had provided him with a service, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a special press conference on Saturday.

The 44-year-old married suspect is surnamed Chong. The victim is a Vietnamese woman in her thirties who worked previously as a domestic helper. However, since her blue card (work permit) expired, she now holds a temporary stay permit.

According to Chan, the Vietnamese victim reported to the police on Friday that a man had robbed her of her smartphone earlier that day in a flat in Rua Quatro do Bairro Iao Hon. The victim told the police that she had struck a 150-pataca sex deal with a male passer-by in the neighbourhood. However, the man refused to pay after her service and instead punched her in the face, robbed her of her smartphone and then left the flat.

Chan said that the Judiciary Police scrutinised the area’s CCTV footage and identified Chong as the suspect. PJ officers confirmed that Chong had entered a building in the northern district after committing the crime. The officers arrested him that night at his home. Under questioning, Chong admitted that he robbed the woman and the officers retrieved the victim’s smartphone from his flat.

Chong was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Saturday, facing a robbery charge, according to Chan.
