The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced in a statement yesterday that its promotional video titled “Sustainable Gastronomy Day 2021 – Preserving Macanese Cuisine” received an award from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) recently.

The statement noted that the award’s category was in “Tourism and the Decade of Action” for the Asia-Pacific Region in the 2021 UNWTO Tourism Video Competition. According to the statement, the competition applauds destinations for their “practices to advance sustainable development” through tourism, with submissions judged based on “creativity, protection and non-discrimination as well as benefits of tourism”.

Released on the Sustainable Gastronomy Day on June 18, the statement pointed out that the video features “MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Macau Institute for Tourism Studies Educational Restaurant Chef Hans Lee Rasmussen, Macanese chefs Florita Alves and Otilia Novo and students aspiring to become chefs”. The video can be viewed at https://www.macaotourism.gov.mo/en/videogallery/1829.

The statement underlined that as part of a series of promotional videos launched to showcase “tourism + gastronomy”, the office released a new video on MGTO’s various social media platforms such as Facebook, WeChat and YouTube, promoting Macau’s gastronomy as well as featuring Macanese chef Ana Manhão Sou.

Sou shared her views on Portuguese and Macanese cuisine and “the origin of some signature dishes”, the statement said. The video can be viewed in Chinese at https://youtu.be/DnZ500btmb8

The statement noted that since 2012, Macanese gastronomy has been inscribed on the list of Macau’s intangible cultural heritage and was added to the 5th National List of Representative Items of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in June.

This undated screen capture provided by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) yesterday shows two signature Macanese dishes that were featured in the office’s newly launched video. The caption provided by MGTO did not identify the two dishes.
