A joint-exhibition entitled “Symbiosis” (共生), which is part of the ongoing 3rd “Annual Arts Exhibition between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” (中葡藝術年展), is being held at Tap Seac Gallery (塔石藝文館) until December 31. The event is hosted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) in conjunction with the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

According to the exhibition booklet, the event invited five Macau artists and five artists from the elsewhere in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) to present 45 sets and pieces of artwork in different media such as oils, acrylics, ink on paper, photographs, and installations such as computer imaging interaction, electronic panels, 3D sculpture, LED light, a mirror installation, and performance arts.

According to the exhibition board of a performance art installation entitled “Express” by mainland artist Liu Xianglin, “a parcel is sent by courier to the exhibition venue every day during the one-month exhibition period, and the art institution staff sign for it every day and place it at the exhibition hall until the end of the exhibition a month later.

“The emergence of express delivery is a new landscape of the city; it has changed the trajectory of modern people in time and space. This work uses express delivery to redefine the relationship between art space, artist and the work”.

The exhibition booklet underlines that the meaning of “symbiosis” is to explore the subtle cultural and artistic links between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

According to a statement by event curator Alice Kok Tim Hei (郭恬熙) on one of the exhibition’s boards, “Symbiosis” is a phenomenon and a concept that has been inseparable from the existence and development of nature, adding that the selection of artworks presented by the invited artists from the mainland have all been linked with the “symbiotic” nature of the local artists in the exhibition. The mediums and forms of presentation echo one another, drawing out the subtle artistic and cultural connections between Portugal, Macau, and the Greater Bay Area which comprises nine cities in Guangdong province and the nation’s two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau.

The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. including public holidays. It is located in Praça do Tap Seac. Admission is free.

As part of the government’s COVID-19 prevention measures, visitors need to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code when entering the gallery.
