The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that it has released its Five-Year Development Plan (Academic Years 2021/22 to 2025/26).

With this year marking the university’s 40th anniversary, the plan was released during an on-campus press conference chaired by UM Rector Song Yonghua (aka Yonghua Song) yesterday. The statement noted that Song presented the university’s “development goals and strategies and measures” and the next five year’s “supports and assurances”.

The statement pointed out that the university’s five-year development plan takes its basis from “the nation’s 14th Five-Year Plan”, the “Vision for the Year 2035”, and the “Second Five-Year Development Plan of the Macau SAR (2021-2025)”. Within the next five years, the statement added, the university will take its development positioning as “being rooted in Macau, taking part in the development of the Greater Bay Area, integrating into the nation and going international”.

The statement underlined that “R.I.S.E.” (Relevance, Impact, Significance and Excellence) will be used as an overall development strategy while UM will carry out its strategies based on five aspects.

According to the statement, the five aspects are to continually strengthen the high-level talent nurturing system; to promote a collaborative, open, and innovative strategic layout for research; to develop the “5-in-1”* research result transfer system; to expand the quality and efficient international cooperation networks; and to develop platforms to serve the local community. The English version of the Five-Year Development Plan’s outline can be found at https://go.um.edu.mo/u3t2zeu7,  the statement said.

Meanwhile, the statement pointed out that for UM’s “supports and assurances”, the university will develop high-standard teams of talents, as well as eventually applying the “public university administrative system reform” according to the government, while also strengthening UM’s capacity for “financial self-reliance”.

Moreover, the statement said that the university’s space planning will be utilised, while conducting various campus construction projects. The statement also noted that UM will take development opportunities from the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, continue to improve the Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute’s (ZUMRI) teaching and research facilities, strengthen the Industry-Academia-Research collaborations, promote the transfer of research achievements, and convey “learning, research and living opportunities for the university’s staff members and students”.

*UM is constructing and improving the “5-in-1” system for research innovation and result transfer, by consolidating and building a high-level industry-academia-research platform incorporating the dimensions of innovation, service, management, cultivation and practice, according to the outline of UM’s Five-Year Development Plan.
