Bus hits jaywalker near Jai Alai: police

The Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday that a jaywalker was hit by a public bus near Jai Alai at about 1 p.m.

According to the statement, the serious accident happened in Avenida do Dr Rodrigo Rodrigues underneath the elevated walkway. The statement noted that the 35-year-old man is a mainlander. It pointed out that when firefighters, medical workers and police arrived at the scene the man’s occipital (back of the head) bone was cracked, adding that he had a nose bleed and was losing his consciousness. The statement noted that he was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.

The statement said that the bus drivers was not drunk and the police suspected the accident was a result of the man jaywalking. The statement added that the police will continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
