A mainlander enrolled in a local university was arrested on Saturday for sexually harassing a woman on the previous day, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 23-year-old suspect surnamed Jiang holds an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (colloquially knows as two-way Permit).
According to Wong, a mainland woman in her twenties reported to the Public Security Police on Friday that a man had sexually harassed her earlier that day. She told the police that she had arrived in Macau that day, and Jiang approached her when she was shopping in Cotai. Jiang told her that he could take her around Macau and they added each other as friends on their WeChat accounts.
Wong said that the duo met again at 7 p.m. that night to go shopping together. The victim told the police that Jiang put his arm around her waist and she asked him to take it away. Then the duo went to a restaurant for dinner in the Nam Van Lake area. Jiang suddenly forcibly kissed her and touched her lower body. The victim immediately pushed him away and left the restaurant. Afterwards, the victim questioned Jiang about the matter via WeChat but he had already blocked her. The victim then reported the case to the police.
According to Wong, PSP officers scrutinised CCTV footage and identified Jiang as the suspect. The Public Security Police arrested him on Saturday when he re-entered Macau via the Hengqin border checkpoint. He admitted that he had put his arm around the woman’s waist and forcibly kissed her.
He claimed he thought that they could develop a relationship by acting like that. However, Jiang denied that he had touched the woman’s lower body, claiming that he had merely massaged her thighs as she had been shopping for a long time.
Jiang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a sexual harassment charge, according to Wong.
