A local woman reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) earlier this month that she was cheated out of 170,000 patacas in an online scam, PJ spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a press conference on Friday.
According to Lei, the victim got to know a male netizen through a social media app mid-September last year. The man told her that he worked as “petroleum engineer in Scotland”. They soon became online lovers.
The “engineer” later told his “online girlfriend” that his daughter was sick in the United States, claiming that he was unable to remit money to his daughter due to his work commitments. He asked the victim to lend him the medical fees for “urgent use”. The victim then made three transfers between last September and last November totalling 170,000 patacas to a designated bank account provided by her online lover, Lei said.
Afterwards, her boyfriend continued to ask her for more money so she finally grew suspicious and reported the case to the police, according to Lei.
