Macau's merchandise imports rose by 66.2 percent year-on-year to 153.9 billion patacas in 2021, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.
Imports of consumer goods rose by 63.5 percent to 111.0 billion patacas. Imports of mobile phone grew by 330.2 percent to 17.9 billion patacas. Imports of watches (11.9 billion patacas), handbags and wallets (10.9 billion patacas) and gold jewellery (9.8 billion patacas) rose by 138 percent, 130 percent and 183 percent respectively.
Exports of goods increased by 19.9 percent to 12.9 billion patacas. Re-exports accounted for 84.5 percent of all exports.
Macau's merchandise trade deficit stood at 140.9 billion patacas last year, up by 59.2 billion patacas from 2020.
Macau's external merchandise trade totalled 166.8 billion patacas last year, up by 61.4 percent year-on-year.
Macau is a separate customs territory of China. It is a founder member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and a member of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
