The University of Macau (UM) hosted a plaque unveiling ceremony for its Macao Centre for Research and Development in Advanced Materials yesterday, which was established with funding from Macau’s Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and has set up three “research directions”, according to a UM statement.
The statement noted that the research directions are in “new energy materials, environmental protection materials, and healthcare materials”, aiming to promote the advanced material industry’s development in Macau and enhance “productivity in scientific research and technology in the city” and across the nation.
According to the statement, UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) said in his speech that the centre will facilitate the commercialisation of new technologies, materials, and products, and help establish a new industrial system in Macau.
The statement added that Song expressed hope that the centre will align with the government’s “development layout”, as well as capitalise on UM’s research strengths in materials science and fully leverage the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin’s “policy room” to support the development of an international innovation and technology hub in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). This is done to promote the advanced materials industry and research’s development, and contribute to the promotion of Macau’s appropriate economic diversification, the statement said.
Meanwhile, FDCT Administrative Committee member Ip Kuai Lam said in his speech that the centre’s establishment is a milestone in the materials industry’s innovative development in Macau. The statement noted that Ip said that the centre will fully use UM’s Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering’s (IAPME) “mature research environment” to promote the commercialisation of existing research results, establish links with local and foreign enterprises and social capital, and “empower” the in-depth cooperation zone.
Moreover, the centre will promote the commercialisation of “excellent research results” at UM to produce new technologies, products and materials, building a new “industrial pillar and cultivating innovative high-tech professionals” for Macau, the statement added.
