A casino dealer and his wife were arrested separately on Sunday for the embezzling casino chips worth a total of HK$161,000 on at least 17 occasions beginning December 13 last year and exchanging them into cash, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a press conference yesterday.
The 45-year-old local suspect surnamed Vong worked for a casino in Cotai for eight years. His 51-year-old local wife surnamed Fong told the police that she works as an electrical appliance saleswoman.
According to Chan, the surveillance department of a casino in Cotai reported to the Judiciary Police on January 27 that Vong had stolen chips while working at least 17 times between December 13 and January 17 from both baccarat and roulette tables. Vong stole one chip each time worth either HK$1,000 or HK$10,000. The casino reported a total loss of at least HK$161,000.
Chan said that PJ officers discovered last Thursday that right after work Vong gave a stolen chip to his wife outside the casino after which she went into the casino and exchanged the chip into cash. On Sunday morning, PJ officers put Vong under surveillance when he was on duty at a baccarat table. PJ officers saw Vong grabbing a chip worth HK$10,000 and sticking it to his palm with the help of a transparent tape. The officers caught Vong red-handed and seized two transparent rolls of tape and a pair of scissors from his staff locker. Under questioning, Vong admitted to stealing the chips due to financial difficulties. The officers later went to the couple’s home in San Kio district and arrested Fong (Vong’s wife). She denied committing the crime, arguing that she did not know that her husband had stolen the chips and that Vong merely told her to exchange the chips into cash.
The couple have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, facing embezzlement charges, according to Chan.
