A local woman was arrested on Monday for stealing 70,000 patacas from a dental clinic where she worked, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old suspect surnamed Sin worked as a receptionist for the clinic for three months and resigned at the end of last month. The victim is a local female dentist who runs a clinic in Zape.
According to Chan, the victim reported to the Judiciary Police last Friday that she discovered discrepancies in the clinic’s cash flow, with a shortfall of 70,000 patacas. PJ officers scrutinised the clinic’s CCTV footage and identified Sin as the most likely suspect. The officers went to Sin’s home in the city centre on Monday and took her to a police station for questioning.
Under questioning, Sin admitted that she stole the money due to the debts from her own business that went belly up a few years ago. As she had the key to the clinic’s cash register, she stole a total of 70,000 patacas on January 3, 11 and 12 from the till to gamble, hoping to win money. She told the police that she used the 70,000 patacas to gamble and repay some of her debts.
Sin has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Chan.
