The Philippine Consulate General has urged the Filipino community to comply with the local rules and regulations on traffic and road use, issuing an advisory for local Filipino bicycle riders in a statement on Sunday.

The consulate issued the advisory for the Filipino community in a written “reminder”, underlining the need for “the use of proper safety equipment” while riding one’s bicycle, as well as never to cycle while being under the influence of alcohol.

The consulate said that it decided to issue the reminder in the wake of the arrest of a local Filipino who rode his bicycle under the influence of alcohol.

Earlier this month, PSP officers apprehended a Filipino male who was unsteady on his bicycle under the influence of alcohol in Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin. The jobless rider later admitted under questioning to drinking at a barbecue party in Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park.

The reminder also noted that the consulate has documented previous cases of Filipinos being arrested for “riding their bicycles while drunk, or riding their bicycles in areas where it is prohibited”.

The reminder emphasised the consulate’s call for the city’s Filipino community to “follow and respect the rules and regulations” of the “host government”.
