The single-runway Macau International Airport (MIA) recorded 1.14 million passengers last year, a year-on-year decrease of 2.2 percent, according to statistics released by CAM, the public concessionaire of the facility, during a media spring luncheon yesterday.
In 2021, the airport handled 15,791 aircraft movements (takeoffs and touchdowns), a year-on-year decline of 6.9 percent. Cargo volume rose by 45.72 percent to 48,595 tonnes.
According to an MIA statement distributed during the luncheon, the airport's passenger traffic and flight movements this year are projected to recover about 30 percent and 34 percent, respectively, of those of 2019, while cargo throughput is expected to grow by about 20 percent compared to the pre-pandemic year.
Macau's civil aviation sector has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since January 2020.
According to the statement, the annual capacity of the airport's passenger terminal building will reach 10 million passengers once the airport's south extension project is completed. The statement pointed out that the extension project has entered its final stage of commissioning and site formation work and is expected to be put into use within this year.
In 2019, the airport reported a record passenger movement of 9.6 million.
