Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak said yesterday that a policy to allow vehicles in Macau to directly enter the mainland will be delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong and other neighbouring areas.

Speaking on the sidelines of the legislature’s 1st Standing Committee meeting yesterday, Wong said that keeping the whole society “safe” is still the government’s top priority, considering the recurrence of the pandemic in Hong Kong and the mainland might have a negative impact on Macau.

Wong pointed out that an online registration and application system is being set. Wong added that the e-system is still in its final stage of technical testing, and he described the progress as “good”.

Wong also said that the number of permits for Macau vehicles to enter Zhuhai’s Hengqin Island stands at 500 per month currently, and whether it will be open for all Macau vehicles without any restrictions would depend on the transport capacity of the new checkpoint project in Hengqin.
