A female tourist from the mainland reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Thursday that she was cheated out of 8,100 yuan in the purported purchase of 1,000 COVID-19 rapid test kits on an online shopping platform earlier last week, PJ spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a press conference on Friday.
According to Leng, the victim travelled to Macau last week and when browsing the internet, she discovered a mainland online shop that claimed to be selling COVID-19 rapid test kits.
The victim placed an order on Tuesday to buy 1,000 kits for 8,100 yuan in total and transferred the money to the shop’s designated account. After transferring the money, the victim did not receive the kits. She checked multiple times with the shop’s “customer service” but was later unable to contact them. She finally realised that she had been defrauded and reported the case to the police.
