A female guest from the mainland was arrested on Friday for stealing a flower vase worth 5,000 patacas that was on display in the lobby of a hotel in Zape, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said at a press conference yesterday.

The 52-year-old jobless suspect surnamed Lu holds an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (colloquially called the two-way permit). She travelled to Macau on Thursday and checked into the hotel.

According to Cheong, a hotel manager reported to the Public Security Police on Thursday evening that a flower vase worth 5,000 patacas displayed in the hotel’s lobby had gone missing.

Cheong said the Public Security Police scrutinised the hotel’s CCTV footage and identified Lu as the suspect. PSP officers arrested Lu in her hotel guestroom. Under questioning, Lu admitted to stealing the vase out of greed and because she found it “beautiful”. She used her jacket as a cover to hide the vase when she stole it. She took the vase to her elder sister’s home in Rua do Guimarães (海邊新街) in the Inner Harbour area. The officers retrieved the vase from her sister’s home. Lu’s sister told the police that she did not know how Lu got the vase.

Lu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Cheong.
