A spokesman for Macau Cable TV (MCTV) confirmed to The Macau Post Daily yesterday that Russia’s English-language international news channel RT has been replaced by a colour bar.

Asked by The Macau Post Daily for a comment, MCTV Chief Commercial Officer John Chiang said in an email that the RT channel “signal is still on the air. However, the content has been changed to a colour bar.”

Chiang added that MCTV found this out on Monday and tried to contact RT “but was unsuccessful”. Chiang said he understood that other operators in the region have encountered “the same situation”.

“I can only confirm that this change is from the satellite source, I cannot judge the intention behind.”

Several readers told The Macau Post Daily over the weekend that RT “vanished” amidst the Ukraine crisis from local TV screens in the middle of last week.

“Why can’t we watch RT about what’s going on in Ukraine but CNN, Fox and all the other Western channels shown by Macau Cable TV? That’s unfair,” a local resident from the US asked The Macau Post Daily yesterday.

This photo taken last night shows a colour bar on Channel 95 of Macau Cable TV which used to show Russia’s English-language international TV news channel RT.
