The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday that a new member has been added to the golden snub-nosed monkey family, with a male infant born to a golden snub-nosed monkey living in Seac Pai Van Park last Tuesday.

The statement noted that the infant is in stable condition and in the care of his mother, adding that the bureau’s animal care and veterinary team will continue to monitor the physical condition of both the mother and her infant. The IAM care team has also reinforced health observation of both to ensure their good physical and mental condition, the statement pointed out.

The team also adjusted the mother monkey’s meal menu and increased the food portions to enable sufficient nutrition for feeding and caring for the infant, as well as to meet the mother’s needs during the lactation period.

Meanwhile, the statement said that the infant’s elder brother “Lian Zi”, who has just turned two, “has been very curious and interested in the baby monkey”, adding that he has been trying to interact with his younger brother.

The monkeys are currently in the Pavilion of Rare Animals of Seac Pai Van Park. The statement reminded the public to keep quiet when visiting their enclosure to avoid affecting the animals.

The statement noted that there are four golden snub-nosed monkeys in the park. A pair of adult monkeys were sent to Macau from the mainland upon the Municipal Affairs Bureau signing a cooperation agreement with the Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Centre in 2017.

The bureau will return the four monkeys to the mainland in batches to enable them to continue to be part of the authorities’ conservation and breeding programme, the statement pointed out.
