The private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) inaugurated its new Faculty of Innovation Engineering during a ceremony held yesterday morning at the university’s Grand Auditorium in Taipa.
A statement provided by the university noted that the new faculty comprises the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Engineering Science, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.
Speaking with reporters after the event, MUST Vice President Prof. Pang Chuan said that the new faculty focuses on engineering and innovation. The university will put more resources to “encourage innovation”, as well as to integrate its resources “such as our Faculty of IT and the Institute of Environment Studies and Institute for System Engineering” among others, and combine them as a new platform “to encourage more innovation”, Pang said.
Pang added that new programmes would be launched for the new faculty such as Material Science and Engineering, adding that the new faculty would also “facilitate the diversification of Macau’s economy” in the future.
Pang also said he thought that the university was set to receive “a little bit more [applications] than last year”. Pang noted that as most of the university’s applicants are from the mainland, applications for the bachelor’s programme will start around mid-May. “We have the confidence that we [will] have more and more applicants and [they] will be of high quality”, Pang said.
The new faculty’s inauguration took place after the Ceremony for Conferment of Honorary Doctoral Degrees.
In attendance were Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, who represented Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and also officiated over the ceremony, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau Zheng Xincong, Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council Liu Chak Wan and MUST Foundation Trust Committee Chairman Chui Sai Cheong, among other guests.
