One more returnee from Hong Kong has tested positive for COVID-19, Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre announced yesterday.

The centre has classified the case as imported and asymptomatic, because of which it has not been added to Macau’s novel coronavirus tally, which therefore remains at 82.

However, the case has raised Macau’s asymptomatic COVID-19 tally to 65.

According to a statement by the centre, the patient is a 21-year-old woman who has received two COVID-19 mRNA jabs. She tested positive for the novel coronavirus upon arrival in Macau on Monday, because of which she has been transferred to the Health Bureau’s (SSM) Public Health Clinical Centre in Coloane for isolation treatment.

1 more ‘re-positive’ case from returnee from HK

Meanwhile, the same statement also announced an imported COVID-19 “re-positive” case, an 18-year-old local man who also returned to Macau from Hong Kong on Monday.

A COVID-19 “re-positive” case means that a person has tested positive for the novel coronavirus again in a nucleic acid test (NAT) after having previously been infected with COVID-19 and recovered.

According to the statement, the man, who has received two mRNA jabs, also tested positive for the novel coronavirus upon arrival in Macau on Monday.

The man, who has not come down with any COVID-19 symptoms, has also been transferred to the Public Health Clinical Centre for isolation.

The statement said that the man was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease in Hong Kong last month, because of which his case has been classified as a “re-positive” case.

Since December last year, the Macau government has separately classified and announced asymptomatic COVID-19 cases and confirmed COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19 “re-positive” cases are not classified as confirmed COVID-19 cases for Macau, neither are they classified as asymptomatic COVID-19 cases for Macau.

Macau’s COVID-19 jab rate reaches 85 pct

Meanwhile, Macau’s COVID-19 vaccination rate reached 85 percent at 6 p.m. yesterday, i.e., nearly six sevenths of the population, which stood at 683,200 at the end of last year, had received at least one jab, the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre announced in a statement last night.

According to the statement, as of 6 p.m. yesterday 580,771 people in Macau had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The statement also said that Macau’s inoculation rate amongst those aged between 3 and 11 stood at 52.2 percent yesterday, while the jab rate amongst all those aged 60 or over reached around 68 percent.

The statement underlined that senior citizens and those with chronic diseases who have been infected with COVID-19 are “very likely” to suffer a serious condition or die from the novel coronavirus disease, adding that the “real-world” data from Hong Kong has proved that COVID-19 vaccinations are “very effective” in preventing a serious condition and deaths from COVID-19.

The statement said that a third dose as a COVID-19 booster jab, regardless of inactivated or mRNA vaccines, can provide a protection rate of around 95 percent against a serious condition and death.
