MPU holds ‘Gambling Disorder Prevention & Treatment Services’ seminar

The Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has held a seminar on “Gambling Disorder Prevention and Treatment Services” to enable students to understand gambling disorders, according to a recent statement provided by Macau’s newest university formerly known as Macau Polytechnic Institute (MPI).

The statement noted that the university invited two specialists from the Macau Social Welfare Bureau’s (IAS) Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment Division to deliver the lecture, which was attended by teachers and students from the Bachelor of Business Administration in Gaming and Recreation Management and the Bachelor of Social Work programmes.

The statement pointed out that IAS specialist Un Kin Cheong and his colleague “introduced the definition and characteristics of gambling, the concept of gambling disorders and addiction, and treatment methods for gambling disorders”.

Moreover, the current situation of the gambling disorders in the city, promotion strategies, as well as measures and effects of responsible gaming were introduced, while opinions on gambling disorders and responsible gambling implementation measures were shared by students, the statement pointed out.

MPU students working in the gaming industry also shared their views on how to further promote responsible gaming measures and gave their perceptions on “deepening the effectiveness of responsible gaming” in the city, the statement noted.

The public university also pointed out, according to the statement, that it pays close attention to its students’ mental health and has invited IAS professionals for several years to give lectures on the prevention and treatment of gambling disorders to help students “view gambling and gambling disorder related issues more rationally”.
