The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it plans to uproot a severely infested Chinese banyan tree in Mong Ha Hill Municipal Park.
According to the statement, the tree was diagnosed with brown root rot. The statement said that a tree surgeon has been treating it and cutting back its branches in hope of saving its life. However, the statement added, the roots are still severely infested and will lose their ability to support the tree, so to avoid the danger of it falling on people, the bureau plans to uproot it.
Meanwhile, the bureau said that it has been examining trees’ health and treating trees in nine parks in Macau to prepare for the rainy and typhoon seasons. The statement said that IAM staff have trimmed about 157 large tees and will remove four trees.
The statement urged residents not to stay under trees during rainy or windy weather, adding that if residents find any abnormalities in trees, they should contact the IAM hotline on 2833 7676.
