The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that its Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), in conjunction with the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Engineering, recently held the 2021/2022 International Collegiate Programming Contest (Asia Macau Regional Contest).

The contest attracted nearly 500 faculty members and students from more than 100 well-known universities from around the world which joined the competition either online or in-person, according to the statement.

The statement noted that the competition is among “the world’s most influential undergraduate programming competitions”, with competitors from universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-sen University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), CUHK, and UM.

The organising committee also invited students from 13 local secondary schools such as Pui Ching Middle School (Macau), Workers’ Children High School and Hou Kong Middle School to experience the activity and to popularise computer programming among secondary school students.

Each team was made up of three students who had to solve “11 practical problems requiring the knowledge and skills of mathematical analysis, data structure, algorithm design and code writing within five hours”, the statement said.

The team then submitted their answer to an online evaluation system after solving a problem, with the team that solved the most problems in the shortest cumulative time winning the championship and qualify for the world finals.

According to the statement, a Shanghai Jiaotong University team won the championship, while teams from Tsinghua University and Beihang University won the second and the third prizes respectively.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest has been a platform for programming competitions since 1970 and nowadays has over 50,000 students from more than 3,000 universities worldwide who have taken part in the contest, the statement noted.
