Gongbei Customs said in a statement yesterday that a male border crosser had 53 old-model Apple smartphones wrapped around his body when he arrived in Zhuhai from Macau.
According to the statement, the incident took place last Thursday, when a border crosser wearing a dark blue shirt crossed the border at the Qingmao checkpoint. The statement said that the mainland customs officers found the man suspicious, so they searched him and discovered a total of 53 smartphones wrapped around his back, thighs and calves. The statement said that the circumstances of the case are still under investigation.
Gongbei Customs urged border crossers to strictly abide by the customs regulations, and only carry items for personal use when crossing the border. The statement underlined that those who carry large quantities of items will be considered to be smuggling and, consequently, will face legal consequences.
