The New Women Development Association of Macau is showcasing artworks at the Mong-Ha Villas by three local artists – Celeste C. da Luz (李晞晴), Alice Ieong (楊雅琪) and Su Cheng (程素)—who hope to deliver messages that break down gender stereotypes, the association says in a recent statement.
Forget the frame & free your imagination
The joint exhibition entitled “Forget the Frame” aims to encourage visitors to “abandon all limitations” and “inspire the possibility of freedom”, according to the exhibition statement.
The statement points out that women live within the expectations and framework of civil society at different ages, being dominated by social identities such as occupations and social status, interests and talents, or seniority relationships. Similarly, they are expected to play certain roles in life, such as daughters, wives and mothers in traditional stereotypes, the statement underlines.
According to the statement, the exhibition is being curated by Carol Lei (利肖杏) and Hannah Ieong (楊嘉敏) and supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
The statement said that apart from the exhibition showcasing various art mediums created by the three artists, there is also a visitor interactive zone and a workshop titled “Breaking the frames in life” as well as a guided tour, in order to deepen visitors’ understanding of the artworks.
The statement noted that the New Women Development Association of Macau was established in 2017, aiming to encourage women to find their own values and break internal and traditional constraints through free expression and education.
The exhibition runs until May 15 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Mong-Ha Villas (望廈山房) in Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (美副將大馬路). Admission is free of charge.
As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the venue have to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health declaration.
