The University of Macau’s (UM) 36th Portuguese language summer course, which will be offered online between July 11 and July 29, is open to applications, the public university said in a statement yesterday.
The application deadline is May 27, with the course to be held via Moodle and Zoom between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. every working day. The statement said that it is open to students, teachers, translators and those interested in the Portuguese language aged 16 and up.
The statement noted that the course is organised by UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ (FAH) Department of Portuguese and will feature both language and thematic courses. The statement added that the course will maintain the previous years’ course content and present “new language and thematic learning methods”.
The courses are offered at beginner, basic, intermediate and advanced levels, with 45 hours at each level, the statement pointed out. About 15 hours will be dedicated to “guided autonomous study”.
The language courses include sessions dedicated to grammar and vocabulary, among others, while the thematic courses comprise 75 hours of courses on topics such as literature, linguistics and cinema, according to the statement.
Moreover, the statement underlined two important courses offered for Portuguese-language professionals in the mainland: Chinese-Portuguese translation and Sino-Lusophone relations, both of which will be taught by academics and translators.
The course will also feature lectures given by Portuguese writers such as Adriana Lisboa and José Luís Peixoto. According to the statement, students can attend all or some of the courses based on their needs. The statement underlined that teaching materials will be provided by the Department of Portuguese. Students can receive a certificate of attendance after completing the course or take a final assessment for a certificate of competence containing a description of the student’s language ability and a list of attended courses.
The course costs 3,000 patacas.
