A 72-year-old local man crashed his car into water-filled barriers (WFBs) on Sai Van Bridge while driving towards Taipa on Sunday but drove away, and when the police caught him, he told them that he had planned to report the case after “getting “warmer clothes”, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference on Wednesday.

According to the local observatory, the temperature on Sunday (Labour Day) ranged between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius.

According to Cheong, PSP officers found pieces of a vehicle and three damaged WFBs on the bridge, so they suspected that an accident had occurred. Cheong said after the police officers identified the suspect, surnamed Chan, who caused the accident, they tried to contact him but he did not answer his phone. Cheong added that police officers were, however, able to intercept him later that day in Rua de Tai Lin in Taipa.

Cheong said that the suspect admitted that he had hit the barriers on the bridge but he wanted to pick up some warmer clothes from home before reporting the case to the police.

According to Cheong, the suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an evasion of responsibility charge.
