Macau Urban Renewal Limited (MUR) said in a statement yesterday that the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) recently invited MUR representatives to give a talk in a seminar titled “Macau Urban Renewal – New Opportunities in Civil Engineering”.

The statement did not say when exactly the seminar was held.

According to the statement, the seminar discussed urban renewal in Macau, the progress of projects that MUR is working on, and new opportunities in civil engineering. Details on MUR’s Iao Hon Estate’s local area plan such as the neighbourhood’s history and “how the redevelopment plan adopts the ‘stock optimisation’ approach and vertical greenery system” were also shared during the meeting, according to the statement.

Guest speakers MUR Senior Civil Engineer Steve Cheok Meng Fai and Urban Planner Joyce Tam Hoi Ian also gave an overview of the company’s organisational structure and a presentation on the local area plan for Iao Hon Estate, and the temporary and home-swap housing project on Lot P in Areia Preta. The guest speakers also gave an “in-depth analysis of the present situation” and urban renewal’s importance in the city.

The statement added that temporary and home-swap housing units on Lot P are being built by MUR to provide residents with temporary accommodation during the urban renewal process, in order to support the urban renewal’s progress.

With its promotion of old neighbourhood revitalisation, the statement underlined that MUR hoped to explore new opportunities in civil engineering with students and inspire them to embrace “diversified development” and obtain a further understanding of the applications of new technology in the engineering sector through different workshops and programmes.

The seminar was organised by FST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in conjunction with the American Society of Civil Engineers International Student Group and UM’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as UM’s Students’ Union (ASCE UMSU), the statement noted.

The seminar, the statement said, was attended by UM’s FST Associate Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Angus Lam Chi Chiu, Senior Instructor Walter Wan Iat Meng, among others.

MUR is a company owned by the Macau government.
