Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng yesterday expressed four hopes for Macau’s young people.

Ho made the remarks at a symposium hosted by the Macau Youth Federation (MYF) and Macau General Association of Chinese Students (AECM) at the Macau Science Centre in Nape. The symposium was held in the wake of President Xi Jinping’s speech at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday during a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC). The aim of the symposium was to learn from Xi’s remarks.

In his speech, Xi hailed the contributions made by young communists over the past century, and called on them to offer energy and creativity to push forward national rejuvenation.

In his speech yesterday, Ho underlined that Macau is undergoing a critical period of historical development. Considering the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Macau’s society and economy, Ho reminded young people that the situation is still severe and complicated. However, Ho underlined that the setting-up of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin have together brought unprecedented historical opportunities for Macau, its young people in particular.

Within this context, Ho expressed four hopes for Macau’s youth:

Firstly, always distinguish between right and wrong, and inherit the core values of patriotism and love for Macau.

Secondly, always strive for self-improvement and comprehensively improve you own competitiveness.

Thirdly, always adhere to virtue as a human being and establish a correct outlook on life and values. Only those who raise up virtue can achieve great things.

Fourthly, always grasp the opportunities of the times and actively integrate yourself into the overall situation of national development. On the journey of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in the new era, it is the mission of Macau’s youth to live up to the times.

Fu Ziying, director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), also addressed the symposium, which was attended by about 150 people, including Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U and Zheng Xincong, deputy director of the Liaison Office.

Fu, the central government’s top official posted to the Macau, offered Macau’s young people three insights:

Firstly, taking history as a guide, we are determined to inherit the spirit of patriotism. Young people can draw their spiritual strength from history, forever passing on the excellent tradition of patriotism and love for Macau.

Secondly, forging ahead and taking on the heavy responsibilities during the era of national rejuvenation. We must be firm practitioners of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, courageous explorers who integrate themselves into the development of our country, and faithful guardians of harmony and stability.

Thirdly, pursuing progress and aspiring to become pillars of talent. We must achieve our dreams with hard work, create the future with our skills, and gather strength through our sentiments. Always keeping in mind President Xi Jinping’s thoughtful exhortations and contributing to the realisation of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the cause of the “One Country, Two Systems” to achieve stability and prosperity.

The symposium was chaired by Alvis Lo Iek Long, chairman of the Macau Youth Federation. Lo is the director of the Health Bureau (SSM).
