The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) urged residents in a statement last night to be aware of the latest weather information before school time this morning as classes may be suspended due to the unstable weather.

According to the statement, the bureau has been in discussion with the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), and considered that the weather today is still expected to be unstable as there is a high uncertainty about the occurrence of rainstorms. The statement underlined that the two bureaus will make students’ security a priority while balancing the students’ “learning routine”, therefore, the bureaus will make the decision based on this morning’s actual weather conditions.

The statement pointed out that in general, and based on the observatory’s weather forecasts, the bureau will announce the possible suspension of classes to the respective education institutions if the Black rainstorm signal has been hoisted, or any special weather conditions that will impact students’ safety have been noticed.  The statement added that when the Yellow rainstorm signal has been issued, parents should consider whether to allow their children to go to school late or not at all, based on the actual weather situation. The bureau also urged the schools to take the application for late arrival or absence from classes into consideration according to the circumstances at that time, and to rearrange and make up for the suspended tests and examinations. The bureau also reminded cross-border students to stay at home if they are not able to go to school if they live in an area that is being affected by extreme weather.

The bureau said in the statement that, in general, schools should remain open and arrange staff to look after the students who have arrived at the campus even though classes have been suspended, and to provide suitable educational activities for them.

The statement also urged schools to implement flood prevention measures, including setting up flood gates and checking the conditions of their buildings and facilities.

All ferries between Macau & Shenzhen were cancelled

Meanwhile, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) announced in a statement yesterday that all ferry routes to Shenzhen from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal and Taipa Ferry Terminal were cancelled yesterday due to the rainstorms and the severe sea conditions. The statement said as the weather is expected to remain unstable in the following days, passengers should expect the ferry companies to make arrangements accordingly. The bureau reminded passengers to ask the ferry companies  about the latest situation as there will be new adjustments to the ferry sailings according to the prevailing weather and sea conditions.

Weather bureau forecasts cloudy weather

Meanwhile, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said in a statement yesterday that a trough of low pressure is affecting the city’s weather, adding that it will be cloudy with occasional showers and a few thunderstorms today. The statement also said that today’s weather will be unsettled and overcast with heavy showers and thunderstorms at times.
