Resort operator MGM said in a statement yesterday that enrolment for the eighth edition of its signature summer programme for children, “MGM Junior Lion Dance Summer Class”, is open until May 29.
According to the statement, the popular seven-week training programme will take place in July, adding that it “is a great introductory learning opportunity for children to explore Chinese culture and strengthen their cultural confidence”. The statement added that it also helps train children to be good team players with self-discipline, while getting physically fit through a series of training activities. Children aged between five and eight are welcome to join.
The training programme has trained “over 460 young lion dance masters” since 2015, the statement underlined, and enables trainees to learn about the history of lion dance, basic movements, the use of different props and musical instruments involved in the dance.
The trainees who complete the programme will perform at the programme’s graduation ceremony in the MGM Theatre. Those with “outstanding performances” can proceed to the “MGM Lion Dance Training Programme”, where they can continue advancing their techniques, the statement underlined.
The statement noted that the “MGM Junior Lion Dance Summer Class” is co-organised by MGM and Mak Chi Leong Dragon & Lion Dance Association Macau, and is supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), and Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
The statement said that those interested can complete the application form on MGM’s official website and send it by email to liondance@mgm.mo with a valid ID copy and health report issued by a registered doctor before 11:59 p.m. on May 29. The statement pointed out that 80 applicants will be chosen through computer balloting.
Successful participants will receive confirmation calls and SMS messages on June 2, while training starts on July 4. For more details, call 8802 3833 or email liondance@mgm.mo.
