The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) said in a statement yesterday that the bureau is paying close attention to the situation of local students in Shanghai and urged them to avoid going to crowded places, travel around or out of the city and be aware of personal hygiene.

According to the DSEDJ statement, the Shanghai municipal government has implemented a measure of “don’t leave Shanghai if unnecessary”, meaning residents in the place should not leave the city if it is not necessary while the city’s educational institutions also urged students not to leave the schools.

The statement underlined that the bureau has kept in contact with local students in Shanghai and communicated with the related institutions and government entities there to pay close attention to the possible impacts on students due to the COVID-19 situation in the city. The statement noted that after receiving requests for aid from local students, the bureau has contacted Shanghai government entities to provide assistance to a group of Macau students.

The statement underlined that after taking into account the students’ willingness to come back to Macau and the expected resumption of flights from Shanghai to Macau, the bureau has discussed the issue with local government entities, such as the Health Bureau (SSM), the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Civil Aviation Authority (AACM), and also the respective airlines. However, although Shanghai is slowly recovering and part of the public transport system has resumed as the novel coronavirus outbreak has been brought under control, the resumption of work and production in the city is still limited so that airlines are not as yet fully staffed. Therefore, the airlines are still in touch with the related entities in Shanghai to ensure that flights to Macau can be relaunched as soon as possible.

The statement underlined that the bureau keeps paying close attention to Shanghai’s pandemic arrangements and the availability of transport between Shanghai and Macau. The bureau will also share any up-to-date information with local students there, the statement added.

In case of any difficulties or specific situations, the students from Macau can contact the bureau by email: studentblog@dsedj.gov.mo or by phone 853 8396 9233 during office hours.

The statement did not say how many students from Macau are currently in Shanghai.
