A drug user was caught by the police on Tuesday when he tried to collect a package containing marijuana at a pick-up point in the central district, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a special press conference yesterday.
Lei said the suspect is a 40-year-old local male surnamed Cheong who works in the tourism industry.
Lei said that during a joint investigation recently with the Hong Kong police, the Judiciary Police discovered that Cheong had bought illegal drugs in South Africa and had them posted to him in Macau via Hong Kong.
On Monday, the Judiciary Police arrested Cheong when he was collecting the package, which was later found to contain six packs of marijuana (aka weed) wrapped in aluminium, said Lei, adding that the marijuana weighed 147 grammes and has an estimated street value of 148,000 patacas.
According to Lei, Cheong confessed that he bought the marijuana abroad for personal-use, and that he has been taking the drug for a year-and-a-half. Lei said the Judiciary Police found grinders, containers and bongs inside his home. Lei said Cheong was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) yesterday, facing charges of buying and selling drugs, drug abuse and illegal possession of drug-taking paraphernalia.
Evidence, including marijuana and drug-taking paraphernalia, seized from the suspect’s home is displayed in a pressroom at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters in Zape yesterday. Photo: William Chan
