The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that recipients of the 14th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize were announced on yesterday’s 6th National Science and Technology Practitioners’ Day, with UM Rector Prof Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) being awarded for his “outstanding contributions to the field of power systems operation and control”.
The statement noted that Prof Song is the only science and technology scholar from Macau to receive the award this year. The announcement was made at the 16th General Meeting of Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), with the prize being regarded by the industry as the “highest award in the field of engineering in China”.
The CAE-administered prize, according to the statement, is awarded every two years to “honour Chinese engineering experts who have made significant contributions to, and outstanding achievements in the fields of engineering technology and engineering management”. The statement said that the award has encouraged mainland engineers and scientists to take part in the research, development, and application of engineering technology.
The statement pointed out that 340 candidates were nominated this year, with 40 awardees chosen after a rigorous evaluation process by nine academic CAE departments and the judging committee for candidates from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
