A statement from the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said that the government-appointed Tourism Development Committee (CDT) convened its first Plenary Meeting of 2022 yesterday, where the work plan for the second half of 2022 was revealed.

Secretary for Economy and Finance and Committee Chairperson Lei Wai Nong, who presided the meeting, was quoted by the statement as saying that the government was dedicated to “steering the composition of industries towards adequate diversification”. The government will also pursue deeper integration across the “tourism +” sector and concerted development between tourism and other related industries, Lei said. According to Lei, the ultimate aim is to improve the “all-rounded competitiveness of Macau’s economy, power enterprises’ growth with innovative thinking and build a solid foundation for economic diversification”.

The statement said that MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes delivered a summary report of the minutes of 2021’s Plenary Meeting, which was approved by the committee. MGTO Deputy Directors Cheng Wai Tong and Ricky Hoi Io Meng gave an overview of Macau’s current tourism situation, MGTO’s major initiatives in the first half of 2022 and work plan for the second half.

Macau, the statement said, registered 2.484 million visitor arrivals in the first four months and an average hotel occupancy rate of 38 percent, while the average length of visitors’ stay rose to 3.4 days. The statement added that the total number of visitor arrivals rose “significantly” over the Labour Day Holidays. The single-day record of inbound visitors peaked at about 42,000 on April 30.

Moreover, the statement said that MGTO planned a variety of major events and activities for the latter half of the year, and has just launched its new “Stay, Dine and See Macao” project offering Educational Student Tours.

For destination promotion, the statement underlined that MGTO has partnered with different entities for the “Experience Macao, Unlimited” promotional campaign, while the “Macao Week” roadshows, touring caravans in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and flash roadshows in shopping malls will be launched in different parts of the mainland.

The statement added that MGTO has also launched various promotional initiatives over its social media platforms and mainland news sites, as well as launched its own Tiktok account.

Meanwhile, several CDT members raised perspectives and suggestions on topics such as mainland group travel, Hong Kong and international markets, TV travelogues and e-marketing and medical observation arrangements, according to the statement.

The meeting’s attendees included Chief of Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Ku Mei Leng, and official representatives of several governmental entities such as the Secretariat for Economy and Finance, Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, Secretariat for Transport and Public Works, among others.
