According to a Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) statement on Wednesday, Macau’s average temperature in May was 24 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperature of 14.9 degrees Celsius was recorded on May 2, both of which have broken the records for being the month’s lowest temperatures since 1952, when Macau’s observatory was established.
The statement said that under the impacts of a northeast monsoon and a northern South China Sea low-pressure zone, the weather in early May was cool and rainy, while in the middle of the month, the weather was affected by the South China Sea Summer Monsoon (SCSSM) with a trough of low pressure, which brought torrential downpours to the nation’s south. The statement added that Macau issued rainstorm and thunderstorm warnings on consecutive days in mid-May.
According to the statement, the total accumulation of precipitation in May reached 514.6 millimetres (mm), which was higher than normal. The statement noted that the rainfall in May was the month’s highest since 2014.
This poster released by the local weather station on Wednesday shows the lowest average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius in May and the lowest single-day temperature of 14.9 degrees Celsius on May 2 since 1952.
