A total of 21 paper artworks by local artists Bing Cheong (張衛冰) and Maria Elisa da Rocha Vilaça are being displayed at an exhibition titled “Wings of May Artistic Works with Paper” at the Creative Macau gallery in Nape.

The works, which are on display until Saturday, are divided into two sections: Vilaça’s “Spring Dreams” and Cheong’s “The Beginning of an Exploration”.

In a recent Creative Macau statement, Vilaça was quoted as saying that as “environmental preservation is a permanent concern” for her, the exhibition’s design is the “best way to express it”. She pointed out that in creating the works based on what nature offers, she aims to explore the multiple possibilities of combining paper with other natural materials in an organic and creative way.

She was also quoted in the statement as saying that the natural materials were “mostly collected in Macau during the two recent strong typhoons that ravaged the city”.

Meanwhile, Cheong was quoted in the statement as saying that exploring how to improve self-expression has always been a challenge for her, with simplifying things and making them easy to understand being her “lifelong endeavour”.

Cheong said that different things in life bring her to different situations and experiences, noting that as long as she listens carefully, “I will always hear my real needs, so that I can better connect myself, others, and different people and things around me”.

Using paper as a medium, Cheong explores the inspiration that it gives her and how it leads her to understand what she needs, the statement said.

Vilaça was born in Portugal and came to Macau in 1982, where she lived for two decades. She returned to Macau in 2011 and is currently the director of the School of Arts and Crafts of the ‘Casa de Portugal em Macau’ Portuguese community organisation, according to the exhibition brochure.

The brochure describes Cheong as the founder of Circle I Studio Company Limited and is a “spiritual practitioner and art experimenter”.

The exhibition is open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. Further information can be found at www.creativemacau.org.mo.
