A local driver crashed into 14 water-filled barriers and left the scene without reporting the incident to the police, in Avenida da Amizade on Wednesday, Public Security Police (PSP) Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference on Friday.
According to Leong, the 36-year-old male suspect surnamed Lo told the police that he works as an engineering salesman.
Leong said that early on Wednesday morning the PSP received a report saying that a number of water-filled barriers in Avenida da Amizade had been damaged. The police found 14 of the barriers damaged and some vehicle debris on the avenue. The police made use of the citywide CCTV camera network and identified Lo and his car, Leong said, adding that they found his damaged car in the Alameda Doutor Carlos d’Assumpção car park in Nape, but failed to contact the suspect.
According to Leong, Lo turned himself in at 4 p.m. on the same day and told the police that he hit the barriers after trying to evade a “shadow” on the road. After the incident, Lo parked his car and took a taxi home.
Lo also told the police that he had drunk alcohol the night before the incident, said Leong, adding that Lo was given a breathalyser during questioning which showed that his alcohol concentration was 0 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. Leong underlined that Lo will not face drink-driving charges, but the driver’s confession about drinking alcohol before driving will be handed over to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for assessment, as well as facing dangerous driving and evading responsibility charges.
