The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement yesterday that its 36th Portuguese Language Summer Course has switched online due to Macau’s current COVID-19 outbreak.
It is slated to begin on Monday.
The summer course is organised by UM’s Department of Portuguese and, according to the statement, has attracted students from Japan, the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau. The statement noted that 50 percent of the students will enrol at intermediate or advanced level courses.
The courses, the public university said, will be taught by Portuguese professors, researchers, and authors of Portuguese textbooks and reference texts from Macau and worldwide.
The statement pointed out that students will join public lectures and thematic courses that cover topics including linguistics, gastronomy, and society and culture of Portuguese-speaking African countries during the three-week course, in addition to 45 hours of language lessons.
Moreover, the statement said that two special courses will be offered, namely Chinese-Portuguese translation and Sino-Lusophone relations. According to the statement, these areas are of “great relevance and interest” to the mainland’s Portuguese-speaking professionals.
Meanwhile, the statement noted that three online lectures by Portuguese writers are open to the public for free. The lectures are as follows: “The First Portuguese Novelists of the 21st Century” by José Luís Peixoto on Monday at 7 p.m., “What is Poetry” by Nuno Júdice on July 20 at 7 p.m., and “Literature and the Natural World” by Adriana Lisboa on July 29 at 7:30 p.m.
