A 32-year-old South Korean man has been nabbed on suspicion of cheating his father out of HK$70,000 by falsely claiming that he had been held against his will because of gambling debts, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said in a regular press conference yesterday.

The spokesperson said the South Korean consulate-general in Hong Kong sought help from the Judiciary Police on Friday to locate a South Korean man who was suspected to have been falsely imprisoned in Macau for failing to pay his gambling debts.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect’s father received a message on Tuesday last week which claimed that his son was being held against his will and asked him to pay a ransom. The suspect, surnamed Oh, was stopped by PJ officers early Tuesday morning this week at the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal as he was about to exit the city.
