Police catch shoplifter not wearing facemask
Police intercepted two male mainlanders yesterday for violating the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, while one man was arrested for stealing from a convenience store, according to a statement by the Public Security Police (PSP).
Based on the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases and due to the government’s special COVID-19 control measures this week, most people are supposed to stay at home most of the time and all adults must wear KN95 facemasks or those of higher quality when out and about.
The statement said that the suspect who confessed to stealing is in his twenties and came to Macau with a mainland travel permit. The other suspect is a non-resident worker (NRW) from the mainland also in his twenties.
The Public Security Police said in the statement that the police received a report at 1:47 p.m. yesterday about shoplifting in a convenience store in Avenida do Hipódromo near the Barrier Gate checkpoint. The statement said that police patrolling the area and stopped the suspect in the neighbourhood.
Under questioning, the suspect admitted that he had stolen twice from the same store, the statement said, adding that the suspect was not wearing a facemask when he was caught.
The statement also said that at 12:05 p.m. the police saw a man not wearing a facemask smoking in Avenida de Maio, Areia Preta district.
According to this week’s special COVID-19 control measures, people in Macau must wear a KN95 facemask when out and about.
The statement underlined that both men have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of breaching the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases. The first suspect also faces a theft charge, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Macau Customs Service said in a statement that its officers intercepted two men on Monday for exercising at the Cycle Track in Taipa and Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde at 10 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively on that day. The statement added that one of them was not wearing a facemask.
The statement pointed out that the two suspects –one local and one from the mainland – are aged 51 and 59 respectively.
The statement noted that in order to ensure that people cooperate with the government’s special COVID-19 prevention and control measures, the customs officers set up roadblocks and enhanced their patrols yesterday, apart from stopping vehicles and intercepting people in areas that are controlled by the Macau Customs Service, including coastal areas, cargo terminals and port facilities.
The statement underlined that people who violate the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases face a fine or up to two years behind bars.
