The Judiciary Police (PJ) urged members of the public in a statement yesterday to be wary of clicking on any link to an unknown website.
According to the statement, the police received a report from a member of the “Friends of Crime Prevention” group pointing out that a person in a social media chat group had forwarded a suspected fraud message, which falsely claimed that “the Macau government will distribute a further 7,000 patacas of financial support to eligible local residents”.
The statement noted that an unknown website link was attached along with the message to tempt residents to click on the link to learn more about the application.
The Judiciary Police said in the statement that PJ officers have not received any reports of people suffering money loss from this scam.
However, in view of the various methods used by criminals for fraud, the Judiciary Police urged people never to forward a message which has not been certified, and to enhance their vigilance against possible crime.
The statement underlined that people should verify the content of the respective website carefully if receiving a link from an unknown source, and not to click on an unknown website or provide personal information.
The statement noted that if fraud or other kinds of crimes are suspected, residents should call the Judiciary Police’s Anti-scam Hotline 8800 7777 or the Crime Report Hotline 993.
