The Macao Chinese Orchestra and the Macao Orchestra will conclude their series of music sharing programmes with their last online exchange session tomorrow afternoon, according to a statement by Macao Orchestra Company Limited earlier this week.

Macao Orchestra Company Limited was established in February this year by the local government to manage the operations of the Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra, according to a statement by the Cultural Bureau (IC) at that time.

The statement noted that the two professional performance groups have already held a total of six online exchange sessions and posted many performance recordings on social platforms. In view of the government’s special COVID-19 prevention and control measures, the orchestras have been using the Internet to share music with audiences by breaking through geographical restrictions, the statement added.

The statement noted that among the participants were students learning musical instruments, music lovers, and music teachers. The statement added that the orchestras are most thankful to the staff of a nursing home who helped the elderly participate in the activity, making the exchange experiences more meaningful.

According to the statement, four Macao Chinese Orchestra members shared the characteristics of their music instruments including Da Ruan (a lute with a fretted neck, a circular body, and four strings), Huqin (a spike fiddle), Pipa (Chinese lute) and Dizi (a Chinese transverse flute) through online exchange sessions from July 14-22. The musicians played beautiful pieces for the audience, and some of them also shared practicing tips and their approaches to learning music, the statement noted.

The statement added that Pipa player Li Tong performed the theme tune from the film “House of Flying Daggers” in her sharing session on July 22 and received thunderous applause, and one audience member from the nursing home even requested an encore from Li because of her “enchanting” performance”, the statement added.

Meanwhile, last Thursday and Friday, the Macao Orchestra hosted two online sharing sessions featuring a bassoonist and violinist. Besides playing their instruments for the audience, the musicians also shared their teaching experiences and how they draw inspiration from daily life.

The statement added that their last online exchange session will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m., featuring cellist Kuong Pou Lei. For more information about the Macao Orchestra, visit: www.om-macau.org
