In separate cases, a local woman and an Indonesian non-resident worker (NRW) have been arrested for stealing a mobile phone worth 9,000 patacas and 1,780 patacas in cash respectively, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference on Monday.
In the first case, the suspect surnamed Ng is a 36-year-old local saleswoman.
According to Wong, the Public Security Police received a report from a woman on Thursday that she had left a mobile phone worth about 9,000 patacas in the toilet of a hotel in Nape early that morning. The police then checked the hotel’s CCTV footage and discovered that Ng, who works in the hotel, had entered the toilet after the victim left. She was intercepted as she was leaving work later that day.
Under questioning, Ng admitted to stealing the phone out of greed, and the phone was handed back to its rightful owner.
In the second case, the suspect surnamed Dewa is 38-year-old bartender.
According to Wong, a cabbie reported to the police on April 28 that he had been driving a taxi that day and picked up a friend in Rampa dos Cavaleiros in Areia Preta before heading to the local airport. After arriving at the airport, he discovered that the stack of cash he kept in the compartment in the door panel was gone.
After scrutinising their citywide CCTV camera system, the police identified Dewa and intercepted him on Thursday in Estrada Marginal da Areia Preta. Under questioning, he admitted to picking up the money, which was recovered by the police, from the street in Areia Preta.
The two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Wong said.
