The entire Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (美副將大馬路) will have three vehicular lanes later this week, the Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced in a statement yesterday.
Yesterday’s statement noted that the government commenced a project in January this year to gradually change more sections of the busy avenue from two to three vehicular lanes.
The 900-metre-long single-way thoroughfare in the northern peninsula runs from the municipal kennels at the Avenida do Almirante Lacerda (提督馬路) junction to the Hoi Fu Garden (海富花園) residential estate at the Avenida de Sidónio Pais (士多鳥拜斯大馬路) junction.
According to a DSAT statement in January, the government changed the section of Avenida do Coronel Mesquita between Rua da Madre Terezina (爹利仙拿姑娘街) and Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida (荷蘭園大馬路) from two to three vehicular lanes at that time.
The section of Avenida do Coronel Mesquita that runs from the Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida junction to the Hoi Fu Garden junction has consisted of three vehicular lanes for years.
Yesterday’s DSAT statement announced that the government will now also change the section of Avenida do Coronel Mesquita that runs from the Avenida do Almirante Lacerda junction to the Rua da Madre Terezina junction from two to three vehicular lanes, because of which the entire thoroughfare will have three vehicular lanes.
According to yesterday’s statement, the project of changing the section to three vehicular lanes requires the removal of five parking spaces for cars there. The three-day project, which started yesterday, is slated to end tomorrow. The operation of three vehicular lanes will take effect once the project is completed.
2 more traffic light crossings
Furthermore, yesterday’s statement also announced that the zebra crossings on two more junctions in Avenida do Coronel Mesquita will be replaced by traffic light-controlled crossings from Thursday, namely the Rua da Madre Terezina junction and the Rua do Padre João Clímaco (羅若翰神父街) junction.
Zebra crossings on a number of junctions in Avenida do Coronel Mesquita have gradually been replaced by traffic light-controlled crossings since 2020.
The thoroughfare is intensively used by schoolchildren due to the neighbourhood’s sizeable number of schools.
