The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted Standby Signal No.1 at 10:30 p.m. yesterday, predicting that there is a “high” probability of the signal being replaced by Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 later today.

The weather station said that Severe Tropical Storm “Ma-on” was centred about 800 km east-southeast of Macau at 10:30 p.m. yesterday, and that it was moving towards the west of the Pearl River Delta.

According to an SMG statement last night, Ma-on will intensify gradually while moving towards the western coast of Guangdong. The statement added that it will be closest to the Pearl River Delta from this evening through tomorrow, posing a “considerable threat” to Macau.

The statement noted that there is a “relatively high” probability of hoisting Typhoon Signal No.8 tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Under the impact of the storm’s broad circulation, its rainbands will bring unsettled weather to Macau this evening, when winds will strengthen “significantly” with frequent showers and thunderstorms, the statement underlined.

According to the observatory, under the combined influence of the expected storm surge and persistent rain, flooding was set to occur in low-lying areas tomorrow morning.

The bureau urged the public to pay close attention to the latest weather information and take precautions against wind and flooding as soon as possible.
