A local man banned from driving was arrested for drunk-driving, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a press conference yesterday.

The 34-year-old suspect surnamed Leung told the police that he owns and manages a restaurant, Leong said.

According to Leong, on Saturday at around 5 a.m. police officers at a police roadblock stopped a car for a regular check in Avenida da Ponte da Amizade in Areia Preta district. Police officers went to the car and asked the driver, Leung, for his driving licence, Leong said, adding that Leung could not present the valid documents and was reeking of alcohol.

Leong said that the police officers then looked at Leung’s driving record and found that his driving licence has been suspended until October 2023 due to evasion-of-responsibility and drunk-driving offences he committed in August 2021. Leung also served a five-month sentence for the offences. Leong added that a breathalyser test showed that the driver’s alcohol concentration was 2.62 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Leung admitted driving with a suspended licence because he needed to give his family members a lift and he had been drinking in a bar in Zape earlier that day, Leong said.

Leung has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Officer (MP), facing drunk-driving and aggravated disobedience charges, Leong said.
