The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that the “18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – Collateral Event from Macao, China’ Open Call for Exhibition Proposals” is accepting proposals until September 20.
The open call is organised by the Macau Museum of Art (MAM) under the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) in conjunction with the Architects Association of Macau (AAM).
The open call aims to encourage local architectural talent to make innovations and increase international exchanges, the statement noted. Those aged 18 and over can submit their proposals, with the winning piece to be exhibited in Venice, Italy in May 2023 to “initiate a dialogue with the contemporary world on an international arena” along with works worldwide.
The statement pointed out that the participating team must comprise at least two members, one of whom must be the curator and at least one holding a bachelor’s degree or above in architecture, urban planning or a relevant discipline. Aside from the curator, all other team members must be permanent Macau residents, the statement underlined.
The statement added that the jury panel will be composed of IC representatives and experts from different regions who will evaluate the proposals and determine the winner of the Gold Prize, Silver Prize and Bronze Prize. They will also choose two winners for the Commendation Prize.
The results will be announced in early October, the statement said. Moreover, the Gold Prize winner will participate in the exhibition on Macau’s behalf, receive a 20,000 pataca cash prize and a certificate.
Since its debut in 1980, the exhibition has become “the largest and most influential event on the global architecture scene”, the statement pointed out.
The statement said that chief curator Lesley Lokko set the theme as “The Laboratory of the Future” to envision the exhibition as a laboratory to inspire visitors to think of the future through cases of modern architectural practice.
Since 2014, the statement said that in the name of “Macao, China”, IC has organised the local architecture industry’s participation in the exhibition to showcase their creativity, with encouraging results achieved over the past four editions.
