Junk left at a shopping centre entrance near the Barrier Gate checkpoint caught fire in the wee hours of yesterday, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement last night.

According to the statement, a resident informed the Fire Services Bureau (CB) about junk including cardboard being on fire at the entrance of a shopping centre next to the entrance to an underground car park in Avenida do Hipódromo at 3:30 a.m.

The statement said that after firefighters put out the blaze, which they considered suspicious, they reported the case to the Judiciary Police, after which police officers searched the burnt junk at the scene but did not immediately find any cigarette ends or any other possible causes for the fire. The case has been transferred to the arson section of the Judiciary Police.

No one was injured in the incident, and no one had reported property damage at the time of the statement last night.
