A closed-door meeting of the government-appointed Senior Citizen Affairs Committee to report on its 10-year action plan for elderly services was held at the World Trade Centre Macau in Nape yesterday, according to a Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) statement yesterday.

The meeting was addressed by the President of Senior Citizen Affairs Committee, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U.

During the meeting, the bureau reported the implementation of its 10-year action plan for elderly services, of which 345 short-and-medium term measures have been completed and 62 long-term measures have been launched, with an implementation rate of about 91.5 percent.

According to the IAS, the action plan covers a ten-year period, the first of which is from 2016 to 2025, and is divided into three phases- short, medium and long term, the short term refered to 2016-2017, the medium term refered to 2018-2020, and the long term referring to 2021-2025.

According to the statement, the bureau also reported on its priorities for next year, including exploring the direction of the elderly services development, reviewing the quality of long-term care services for the elderly, assessing the living conditions and needs of the elderly who live alone, and establishing a collaborative mechanism for day care and home-based care services.

According to the statement, representatives from the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) presented details related to the elderly population in the 2021 Census, including the number, gender and age distribution, education level, self-care ability, household structure, and housing type of the elderly population.

Ao Ieong pointed out that as the elderly population in Macau continues to grow, the government will increase the supply of elderly services to meet the needs of the elderly, and hopes that the committee will continue to contribute to the development of elderly services and improve the living environment of the elderly in Macau, the statement said.

The statement said that in order to continuously improve the pandemic prevention and control measures in the city’s nursing homes for the elderly, the bureau shared their experience of implementing closed-loop management measures during the recent pandemic outbreak.

Ao Ieong said that the government attaches great importance to the pandemic prevention and control work at nursing homes for the elderly. Ao Ieong also pointed out that the government had implemented closed-loop management measures at the beginning of the recent pandemic outbreak, which successfully protected the lives of the service users, the statement said.
